What Happens When You Don't Wash Your Face

You’ve heard it plenty of times before: “Always wash your face.” No, splashing water on your face doesn’t count. So what’s the big deal?

If you don’t wash your face twice a day, your skin is in danger of breakouts due to oil, dirt and makeup clogging pores. Your pores will appear larger and your skin will look dull and textured, instead of having a radiant, youthful glow.

Cleansing helps increase hydration, remove unwanted impurities, and maintain clear, radiant skin. In fact, your skincare products work best on a clean face. Dr. Schultz shared some best practices for cleansing each day, twice per day.

Find Your Skin Type

Before you start, you need to know your skin type. Do you have oily, dry, normal, or combination skin? If you are unsure, take this quick quiz.

Regardless of your skin type, everyone needs to wash their face. The difference lies in the ingredients of your cleanser. Dr. Schultz says, “You may be doing more damage to your skin if you are using the wrong products for your skin type and/or condition.”

If you have oily, normal, or combination skin, you want to use a cleanser that will get rid of dirt and excess oil. Something similar to the Balancing Glycolic Cleanser will do the trick. The added benefit of glycolic acid will help to both brighten and balance your skin.

If you have dry or normal skin, a cleanser that won’t over-dry or irritate your skin is the way to go. The Gentle Cream Cleanser has a creamy formula that is enhanced with chamomile, meaning that it will both clean and soothe your face.

Take the Two-Step Approach

Believe it or not, the cleansing process is actually a two-step process. So, the cleansing process is not complete until you use a toner. Sometimes your cleanser can’t get all of the dirt off your skin, so that’s why toner is a necessity.

Dr. Schultz says, “The two-step cleansing and toning process not only prepares the facial skin to allow the active ingredients in corrective products to perform in optimum fashion, but it also enhances their ability to fix what is broken, that is, to improve your color and texture.” After cleansing, finish with a toner like Clarifying Toner. Not only does it removes excess impurities, but it retains moisture, too.

After your face is freshly clean, it is ready to lock in hydration. This is when you use your skincare products like serums and moisturizers. Your clear, glowing skin is only a wash away.
