Get Covered
Much like moisturizers with sunscreen, makeup with SPF does protect your skin at the level that it claims on the bottle. Any product sold with SPF has been tested and approved by the FDA. However, like moisturizers with sunscreen, any makeup with SPF has been tested on a bare face, which means that to get the protection listed on the bottle, it would need to be applied first after cleansing. If you use other products in the morning, you may need to invest in a separate SPF. Applying products such as moisturizer after you apply foundation is not going to give you that flawless face you were looking for.
Best Protection
One solution to this problem is to use a BB cream, which combines a moisturizer, tint and an SPF in one product. That way, you won't have to worry about the order of application for the products and you can be sure that the SPF is the layer closest to your face. If you decide to wear only a foundation in the morning for your SPF, be sure to select a liquid or cream one, as it is hard to ensure that you are getting adequate coverage from a powder foundation.
While foundations with SPF are a great way to get your sun protection, be sure to select one that can be used on its own.
