Skincare Essentials Recap

Sunscreen

I must have said this at least a hundred times already, but sunscreen is the number one priority for skincare. If you don't put anything else on your skin, please (actually, pretty please) use sunscreen everyday. And this means in the winter months as well, when grey skies and snow can sometimes shadow your perspective on just how powerful the sun is. A good sunscreen can go a long way in preventing those UV rays that make the long trip from the sun from penetrating your skin, which is the direct cause for premature photo-aging. This fancy term translates to fine lines and wrinkles.

When to apply? In the morning, right after cleansing and toning.

Exfoliants

Dr. Schultz is an advocator of exfoliation and I must say, after jumping on the exfoliation wagon, I am a big advocator of the practice as well. Exfoliation is one of the best ways to get rid of dead skin cells that accumulate on the surface of your skin, which causes rough patches and an uneven texture and tone. In addition to getting rid of these cells, an exfoliant can help prevent acne breakouts that result from cell and dirt build-up. The result is glowing, smooth skin. There are two different types of exfoliants, chemical and physical, and depending on the product's strength, you can use it everyday. I notice a difference (and not a good one) if I miss even a few days of exfoliation. It's a wonder product.

When to apply? In the evening, right after cleansing.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants are the third step in maintaining healthy, beautiful skin. You've got protection from the sun with a daily sunscreen and a chemical exfoliant will help control the build up of dead skin cells and dirt that cause dull, rough skin. So, exactly what role will the antioxidant play? This product will help neutralize any free radicals that may have made it past your layer of sunscreen; these particles can also contribute to premature photo aging. An antioxidant can also help your exfoliant keep your appearance fresh and healthy.

When to apply? Dab on a topical antioxidant after applying your exfoliant.
