There are two different types of exfoliants: physical exfoliants and chemical exfoliants. Physical exfoliants include scrubs and any other method that physically removes the layer of dead cells that reside on the surface of your skin. Chemical exfoliants include glycolic acid and any other ingredients that either dissolve the dead cells or the glue that holds the dead cells to the surface of your skin. Dr. Schultz details the differences between these different types of exfoliants, when each is more appropriate, and which you should use.
